Virgin Gorda - Activities

Day Trips

Salt Island

Salt Island contains three traditional salt ponds which you can visit. The island is most famous for the RMS Rhone, an incredibly preserved sunken shipwreck. This wreck is a must-see for scuba enthusiasts.

Norman Island

An incredible snorkeling destination, Norman Island is a popular place to drop anchor. Legend says buried treasure can be found in one of the many island caves. The island is supposedly the basis for Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island. Just off Norman Island are The Indians, large rock formations similar to an Indian headdress, which make for good snorkeling, as well.

Anegada

Located north of Virgin Gorda, Anegada is known for its 300+ wreckages off Horseshoe Reef. The island is a flat coral and limestone atoll that never reaches more than 28 feet above sea level and, therefore, is virtually undetectable from afar. Anegada offers excellent snorkeling off its reefs and white sand beaches that stretch for miles. Fly BVI (284-495-1747) operating out of Tortola offers sightseeing tours of the island.

Walking & Hiking

Gorda Peak National Park

North Virgin Gorda

Gorda Peak National Park is a 265-acre area containing a variety of indigenous and exotic plants. Gorda Peak stands 1,370 feet as the highest point on the island. There are many self-guided trails to the peak -- the hike to the summit is roughly 30-40 minutes. Be sure to bring a bottle of water for the climb up. The vegetation in this park is not particulary lush so avid hikers wishing to see more diverse flora and fauna should take the ferry to Tortola to hike Sage Mountain National Park (1,780 feet), which was once a rainforest.
